We are the Australian Women's Volleyball team and we need your support!

Imagine the feeling of achievement, the pure excitement of hearing "you've been selected to represent Australia". For many of us, this is a dream that has been held for over a decade and to achieve this moment is second to none.

And then the unexpected happens. The very next sentence we are told is, "the cost is...", and a five figure number, yes in the thousands is written in front of us.

That's the reality for our team.

The Australian Women's Volleyball Team. Also known as the "Volleyroos" is a unit of strong, determined and passionate women with a great desire to climb the world rankings and grow the sport of volleyball in Australia. 

We promote, encourage and stand for girls and women in sport, and are proud ambassadors for Australia. On our most recent tournaments to the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam in 2022, we were often spoken of by hosting nations as the most friendly, positive and happiest team of volleyball players.

Most people assume that an Australian team is funded by the governing organisation, federation and/or government sport grants. Many women’s teams are such as Cricket, Swimming, Rugby, Netball, Soccer and AFL, however elite female volleyball players aren’t fully

funded this way.

We know our team has the ability to be the best Australia has produced in decades. Already we are putting other nations on notice with international commentators stating Australia is ‘the up-and-coming team to watch’.

We have taken major steps forward through recent historical success by qualifying for the 2020 Asian Olympic Qualifiers, ranking 40th in the world, and top 8 in Asia (January 2021). These numbers are fuelling our desire for greater growth and with the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane, we are pushing to be our strongest and most competitive on the international stage.

We know how to do this. This growth is only achievable if we bring our team together to train and compete internationally. To be the best, we must play the best. And the best teams in the world are playing in Asian tournaments.

We plan to have our team come together for multiple camps at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra this May, before making our way to Indonesia for Asia Challenge Cup in June. In July we aim to attend more camps at the AIS. And again in August, we hope to come together at the AIS for a final time, before attending the VTV Cup in Vietnam and Asian Championships in Thailand

You can imagine the major costs our players are looking at to attend these camps and overseas trips. Typical costs each of us are expected to cover include: flights, ground transport, accommodation, food, gear and more. With the additional challenge for most team members of lost income from time off work and for some additional challenges of absence from university studies.

As you can see, although we are extremely proud to represent our country, our ability to do so comes at great personal cost and some of us may not be able to participate this year without financial support.

We have been extremely grateful to have intermittent financial support from our federation and generous donors in the past, however moving into the start of the 2023 season, we are set to be self-funded.
