ABOUT THE PROJECT

The Woden Valley Gymnastics Club (WVGC) is a happy community club based in the ACT. 

We love it when our gymnasts win competition prizes, but that’s not our only aim. We ensure that we welcome everyone, no matter what their age, ability, or background. We now have about 1600 active gymnasts, and a further 700 students coming once a week as part of their school's physical activity program.

The Woden Valley Gymnastics Club is the most inclusive and diverse gymnastics club in Canberra and the region. Our oldest member, who turned 80 recently, trains with a very committed group of about twenty over-50s gymnasts (most of whom are in their sixties and seventies) who compete at national and international events. The Enable Gym program helps adults and young children with special needs, with over 60 gymnasts currently training across all the programs offered. Our most popular programs are Kindergym (9 months to five years), FreeG for children (a form of Parkour), and a number of recreational gymnastics programs. We also run popular competitive programs, and our gymnasts have been very successful.

Quality coaching is another strong focus of our club. As at November 2023, we had 70 qualified coaches who are strongly encouraged (and supported financially) to continually upgrade their skills and formal coaching qualifications. The provision of diverse training and education experiences provided to young coaches enables them to learn and practise communication, management and interpersonal professional relationship skills which are lifelong. 

As a not-for-profit community organisation, we do occasionally need a bit of extra help to cover particularly large expenditures to replace old equipment, especially to maintain our enviable safety record. This assistance means projects such as this do not increase fees for all our members and helps us continue to grow!

Our current project is the replacement of old safety padding around the foam pit, as well as the purchase of new foam blocks. The total cost is estimated to be $150,000, with completion by about late 2024.
