ASF Breaks Records with $98.8 Million in Donations for Sport
October 18, 2024
The Australian Sports Foundation (ASF) is proud to announce a record-breaking year in donations for the Australian sporting sector. In the 2023-24 financial year, the ASF raised an unprecedented $98.8 million, a 24% increase from the previous year, marking a major milestone in our mission to support grassroots and elite sport across the nation.
Despite financial challenges and cost-of-living pressures, the number of donations surged by 38%, benefiting athletes, clubs, and infrastructure projects. This achievement highlights the importance of philanthropy in supporting Australian sport at all levels.
ASF CEO, Sue Hunt AM, commented on the significance of this growth:
"This extraordinary result confirms the Australian Sports Foundation as the fundraising sports platform of choice for Australians and helps to address significant underfunding issues across the sector.
The impact of ASF extends from the elite to the community level, through major infrastructure projects that increasingly benefit growing numbers of girls and women, to the delivery of programs and subsidising travel, competition and other costs that are increasing as traditional revenue streams decline.”
Among the key growth areas, fundraising for community sports rose by 31%, driven in part by increased participation among women and girls. Facilities, infrastructure, and athlete development also saw a sharp rise in donations, with sports such as Australian Football leading the way, raising $29.5 million—$9.5 million more than the previous year.
FY24 was particularly significant for fundraising directed toward athletes preparing for the Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics, with donations to individual athletes rising by 66%. ASF's support of these athletes was essential, particularly as traditional revenue streams for many sports continue to face challenges. Notable Olympians, including boxing bronze medallist Caitlin Parker and BMX freestyle athlete Natalya Diehm, were among the beneficiaries of successful fundraising campaigns.
Victoria topped the list as the leading state for sports fundraising, generating $37.1 million through more than 1,000 campaigns. NSW followed closely with $34.4 million, and the ACT recorded an impressive $11 million, driven largely by the success of community rowing initiatives.
Minister for Sport, Hon Anika Wells, praised the fundraising achievements:
“This record fundraising result of almost $100 million to the Australian Sports Foundation’s platform is a testament to the generosity of Australians and our collective desire to invest in sport at every level, from grassroots to the elite, including our Olympians and Paralympians in 2024."
Looking ahead, the ASF remains committed to addressing the funding needs of the Australian sporting community, ensuring that athletes and clubs alike have access to the resources required to thrive.
