Platform Update: Improvements to Project URLs

Platform Update: Improvements to Project URLs

November 27, 2023

News

For the past few months, the ASF has been working diligently behind the scenes to bring you a revamped website. The launch of this new website is right around the corner, and before it goes live, we want to share a few noteworthy changes to projects.

What's changing?

Streamlined URLs

With the upcoming updates, all projects, regardless of their type, will follow a uniform URL structure. The new URLs will soon appear in this format:

All previous URLs will seamlessly transition to the new structure and automatically redirect to the correct location. So, if you’ve shared your project online or use QR codes, donors will still be able to view your project and, most importantly, make contributions.

Automatic redirects following name changes

In the past, if an organisation or individual altered their Project Name or Web Name, the URL would also change, rendering all past links useless unless the ASF team manually redirected old URLs.

A new URL will still be generated when a Project/Web Name is changed, old links will now automatically redirect to the updated project. This helps to make it a hassle-free process for our fundraisers who need to change their project name.

Special characters

When updating or creating a new Web Name or Project Name, only the following characters will be allowed:

  • Space

  • Apostrophe (')

  • Ampersand (&)

  • Period/full stop (.)

  • Hyphen (-)

  • Forward slash (/)

  • Comma (,)

  • Inverted comma (")

  • Colon (:)

How will these changes impact you?

Thankfully, these changes won’t have any adverse effects on your projects.

We’ve ensured that all old URLs will automatically redirect to their updated versions, you can now make updates to Project or Web Names without requiring any assistance from the ASF.

However, it’s important to note that there are limitations on the number of times a name can be updated, so we recommend only making changes when absolutely necessary.

If you have any questions about these changes or any other aspect of your ASF fundraising, please don’t hesitate to contact our Support Team
