ABOUT Alhena Lamont
When I learnt about buhurt, a fully armoured full-contact sport, I was intrigued. Then I saw it live for the first time and I was enthralled. Axes and falchions hitting steel. The camaraderie between the teams. The revelry.
I shocked every person in my life when I signed up.
"You're the least confrontational, most non-violent person I know. How are you going to do this?"
It was a great question—I honestly didn't know. Just that, I knew my dad would've loved this. He would've been horrified and ecstatic all at once. I had to give it a go. So, I started by showing up. No combat experience, no clue. Holding a hope that my dad was smiling and shouting me on from the Milky Way as I did the inconceivable.
My club, Team Vultures Sunshine Coast Armoured Combat, were incredible. They met me where I was, welcoming and supportive. In fact, every Australian team I have met, fought against or with, has been like reuniting with old friends and family. The sport’s unofficial motto is ‘buhurt is love’ and I have felt that every step of the way.
In no time at all, I found myself earning my belt flag as I walked into the lyst for my first tournament. Vulture’s fighter 43. A number I feel blessed to have due to its connection to my dad. A subtle ode I take with me to every fight. I think, just maybe, it’s safe to say, he’s pretty stoked.
And now, I am preparing for my first international tournament in July of 2026. The Buhurt International Buhurt Invitationals will be held in Romania just a few days after what would have been his 49th birthday.
WHY AM I FUNDRAISING?
2026 brings an international competition that will be entirely self-funded (flights, accommodation, etc). Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Please donate to the campaign to support this directly.
Outside of the campaign duration, if you wish to contribute, any and all funds donated will be used towards either personal development or tournaments. For personal development, this includes further training (e.g. supplementary combat sport classes), equipment (soft kit, armour, and maintenance), medical support (e.g. physiotherapy). For tournaments, this includes travel and accommodation.
Buhurt is a niche sport that is rapidly growing. The women's division alone within Australia has at least doubled within the last couple years. The development of female buhurt athletes is integral to the improvement of the sport locally and internationally.
