ABOUT BGH Breakers
BGH Breakers was established because we want to make sport accessible - we believe play should be a right, not a privilege.
Bridgewater, Gagebrook and Herdsmans Cove (BGH) are home to over 7,000 people. They all rank in the 7 most disadvantaged suburbs in Tasmania and have some of the worst health and wellbeing outcomes in the state.
There has been a generational void (45+ years) of sporting clubs representing these interconnected suburbs. Local parents want their children to have the same opportunities and experiences as children in other communities.
Many local children have never played in organised sporting teams, have limited experience and exposure to sport and sporting culture, contend with transport issues, or simply cannot afford to play. Research shows participation in sport benefits health and academic outcomes. However, children who live in poorer suburbs face major barriers to participation. Research also shows it is these children who are likely to benefit most.
BGH Breakers fundraises to cover all participation costs for local children, including registration fees, uniforms, equipment and when needed, transport and even shoes.
Sport can also be a powerful vehicle for broader social change.
