ABOUT Brianna Keyes
As a teenager and in my early twenties, handball was my life. I travelled the world representing Australia, competing at the Youth Olympics and the Indoor Handball World Championships.
Then an injury I sustained while playing ended my career. Watching handball became too painful.
What made it so hard was that I didn’t just lose elite level sport but I couldn’t play any community level sport or kick the ball around with my daughter at the park which I had always imagined doing. For years, I believed I’d never play sport again.
After receiving a disability diagnosis, I began training for and exploring para sport.
For the first time in years, I feel like me again.
This September, I’ve been selected to represent Australia at the Wheelchair Handball World Championships in Spain.
I’ll become the first athlete to participate in both the indoor world championships and wheelchair handball world championships.
Like many athletes in para sports, our team is largely self-funded. We’re responsible for covering flights, uniforms and training camp and expenses ourselves.
If you’re able to support my journey, no matter the amount, I’d be incredibly grateful. Every donation or share will help me get to Spain to wear the green and gold once again.
