ABOUT Charlie Snell
Charlie Snell is an experienced youth sailor that debuted in the Australian skiff sailing scene in 2022 at Manly 16ft Skiff Sailing Club, after learning how to sail at a young age from neighboring Manly Yacht Club in smaller single-handed dinghies (O’pen Skiffs/Optimists). Charlie’s sailing campaign involves a variety of boat classes ranging from small foiling dinghies to larger keelboats in multiple coached programs.
13ft Skiff Since the 2022/23 sailing season Charlie crews on his 13ft skiff out of Manly 16ft Skiff Sailing Club. He and his skipper compete at a high level, achieving top results every Saturday and at state and national level regattas around the country as far as Hervey Bay, QLD in January 2025. The team finished 2nd overall in the club championships and short-course-ps in 2025. Charlie aims to complete one more season in this boat aiming for gold (2025/26) then move onto Olympic class sailing.
29er Charlie has been training 3-4 days a week starting in February 2025 in preparation for the European Championships in Lake Garda, Italy, from July 1st to the 8th with aims of placing top 10 in the top “gold” fleet. Extensive training includes afternoon and morning coached sessions and gym during the week and weekends as well as local state regattas. He competed in the 2024/25 29er State Championships Round 2 a week after his first sail on the boat and took out top 3 results. From the 7th – 9th June the team are competing in the East Coast Championships which will serve as an indicator of international performance.
Waszp As of 2023, Charlie acquired a Waszp which he sails out of Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club and competes in a variety of one design regattas such as local events, club racing, states, and nationals. In December 2023 he competed in the Waszp Worlds in Sorrento, Victoria, for his inauguration in international regatta sailing. His return from Hobart (SBSC) for the nationals in January 2025 added to the list of events completed this season after traveling down from Queensland in the same month for the 13ft Skiff Nationals. The most recent regatta being the NSW states at WSC in February 2025 had significant improvement with up to 10 placements. Later in 2025 he will be competing in the Waszp Worlds in the UK from the 19th to the 25th of July after the 29er European regatta earlier that month.
Elliott 7 Charlie debuted in the keelboat match racing scene in 2024 with the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club’s “Youth Development” program which had weekly coached training and gym sessions. His position is bow/foredeck which saw his team win a local fleet racing regatta mid 2024.
J24 Charlie belongs to a youth keelboat team with 3 other U19 sailors in the J24 boat class. He took out the Australian J24 youth challenge for two consecutive years (2023-2024) with other notable results including 1st at the 2024 State Championships on PHS. He and his team qualified for the World Championships in Seattle held late 2024 from a top result at the Nationals.
The team was invited to Melbourne for the 2023 Victorian State Championships alongside top sailors.
49er Charlie has the aims of competitively sailing the Olympic class skiff starting in 2026 after moving on from the youth classes. He has done some training on the boat and feels incredibly comfortable with already clear improvement and skill.
