The Griffith Sailing Club has always been more than a place to launch a boat. It is a community asset, a meeting place, and a source of connection for families, friends, volunteers and local residents who value the lake and all it offers. For generations, it has provided a place where people could gather, learn, compete, volunteer and enjoy the simple pleasure of being on the water. That is why the flooding event of 2022 struck so deeply. As water levels rose across the region, buildings and infrastructure around Lake Wyangan were inundated, and the club facility itself was left underwater for around 12 months. The damage was extensive, and what had once been a vibrant community space was brought to a standstill.

Since then, the Griffith Sailing Club community has worked tirelessly to rebuild. Thanks to the commitment of members, volunteers and supporters, the facility has been brought back to a functional state. Clean-up efforts, repairs and practical improvements have helped restore the club to the point where it can once again welcome people back to the lake. That progress speaks volumes about the resilience, generosity and determination of the community behind the club. But it has not been easy, and it has not come without cost.

Recovery is still ongoing. Although significant progress has been made, the long-term effects of water damage continue to emerge, and important repairs are still needed. Some are obvious, while others are less visible, but all are essential to ensure the facility remains safe, functional and able to serve the community into the future. The club has also been affected by blue-green algae in Lake Wyangan. Water quality warnings have restricted recreational activities and reduced confidence in using the lake, which has also affected membership and participation. At times, red alert conditions have meant the water was unsuitable for recreation, although more recent monitoring has shown periods of improvement and amber alert conditions that allow more cautious use. Lake Wyangan is regularly monitored by Griffith City Council, which has also trialled treatment approaches aimed at reducing blue-green algae and improving long-term water quality for recreational users.

There is reason for hope. Changes in lake management practices, ongoing monitoring, and treatment initiatives are expected to improve water quality over time, creating better conditions for recreation and renewed community confidence in the future. But hope alone will not finish the job. To fully restore the Griffith Sailing Club, ongoing fundraising support is essential. Every contribution helps repair the lasting effects of flood damage, strengthens a much-loved community facility, and supports the return of safe and active use of Lake Wyangan. This is not just about repairing a building. It is about protecting a place of belonging, recreation and community connection. With continued support, the Griffith Sailing Club can move beyond recovery and once again thrive as a valued part of the Griffith community.
