My name is Hayden Sargeant, and I’ve just returned from representing Australia in Rugby Sevens at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Wearing the green and gold on sport’s biggest stage was a dream come true, but I'm not done yet.

I’m originally from Grafton, NSW, and like many kids, I grew up with big dreams and a footy in my hands. I took the long road to international rugby, released from a development contract during COVID, back on construction sites full time. But I never let go of the goal. I kept training, kept playing, and in 2023 I debuted with the Aussie 7s team in Los Angeles. Since then, I’ve played in 17 World Series tournaments and proudly worn the jersey in 80+ international matches.

Now, with an Olympic Games under my belt, my focus is forward: World Series podiums, Commonwealth Games success, and the next Olympic cycle.

Although Rugby Australia supports us, the funding we receive only goes so far. We’re competitive, but we do more with less. To stay at this level and push even higher, I need support to fill the gaps in recovery, training during off-seasons, high-quality rehab, and the resources that take performances from good to great.

This isn’t just about me. I want to build something bigger. A career that shows young Aussies you don’t need a straight path to succeed. That being released, overlooked, or underestimated isn’t the end. It’s just part of the story.
