    ABOUT Makai Lakes Outrigger Club

    Point Wolstoncroft, NSW

We are a small but active outrigger canoe club located at Gwandalan, NSW. Our members are very experienced in regattas along the east coast of Australia. Some have paddled overseas! Our main membership are male and female seniors, some of whom have had dragon boat experience. Although few in number compared to larger population centres, our members are keen, active and very loyal. A growing number are from the local area. Occasionally we compete within the teams of other clubs.

We frequently hold Come&Try days to recruit new paddlers. Our club is actively fundraising throughout the year. We do not have sponsors. All of our equipment is due to the continued hard work of our members. Our fundraising has successfully permitted us to purchase training 6-seaters (OC6) as well as four smaller outriggers, OC1 & OC2. It is these smaller outriggers we need protection for. They were recently purchased and are vital for our training program.

Another ongoing cost is the maintenance of our equipment, particularly the race boats which accommodate 6 paddlers. We transport the boats on a trailer which requires registration and maintenance as well.

In particular we would like to keep our smaller canoes, which seat 1 or 2 paddlers, protected from the elements with protective covers.

Looking after our canoes is an ongoing commitment for our members. Currently the OC1 & OC2 covers are worn, torn and deteriorating leaving them exposed to the weather. The lockup shed, which is leased from Point Wolstoncroft, is to keep paddles, lifejackets and other small equipment needs, is too small to accommodate any of our boats. The covers urgently need to be replaced by a local provider from whom we have sought quotes. We wish to have them adequately covered before we commence the 25/26 season.
