ABOUT Mitch Albert
I didn’t make the World Cup team this time - I didn’t have a proper sports Hockey Powerchair. But I’m not giving up — I’m committed to improving my game, competing at nationals in January, and continuing to work toward future international selection.
To have a real shot at competing at the highest level, I need your help.
A little about me, I live with Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy (FSHD), a progressive muscle-wasting condition that has meant using a wheelchair since I was five. Life throws challenges at everyone, but FSHD adds a layer that makes even simple daily tasks difficult without support. I believe FSHD has shaped who I am today — it’s taught me resilience and motivated me to keep working toward goals that matter to me, like representing Australia in hockey.
I’ve been involved in wheelchair sports since I was six and started playing hockey at nine. Over the past nine years, I’ve won a number of championships and MVP awards. Hockey has become more than a sport — it’s a way to challenge myself, grow, and connect with amazing people. Now, it’s also a path to fulfilling my dream.
But here’s the challenge: I currently play in a sports wheelchair designed for soccer, which isn’t suitable for elite-level hockey. At the international level, athletes use custom-built power hockey chairs designed for speed, manoeuvrability, and precision. These chairs cost around $36,000, and without one, I simply can’t compete at the level required for national selection.
To put it in perspective, playing hockey in a soccer chair is like trying to play baseball with a cricket bat — you can hit the ball, but it’s not built for the game.
Having the right chair gives me a fair chance to compete, improve, and chase my dream — and that’s why I’m asking for your support.
Every donation counts — thank you for being part of my journey.
