ABOUT Northern Beaches Para Surfer Boardriders

1. Who We Are

Northern Beaches Para Surfer Boardriders Inc (NBPSB) is Australia’s first dedicated para surfer boardriders club, based at Mona Vale on Sydney's Northern Beaches. Founded in 2023 by ISA World Para Surfing Champion Emma Dieters, NBPSB is a grassroots, non-profit organisation created to empower adaptive surfers of all abilities.

We bring together recreational surfers, competitive athletes, beach pushers, water safety volunteers, and families to form an inclusive community built on ocean accessibility and camaraderie.

2. Why We Care (Our Purpose)

The ocean should be accessible to everyone, yet adaptive surfers face substantial physical, financial, and logistical barriers just to reach the water. Custom adaptive surfboards, specialized beach wheelchairs, and essential water safety teams require resources far beyond standard surfing setup costs.

We care because surfing delivers transformative physical rehabilitation, mental health benefits, and a profound sense of independence. By providing structured ocean access and peer support, we turn adversity into adventure and ensure no surfer is left on the beach.

3. How We Plan to Make It Happen

Our operational strategy focuses on four core pillars:

  1. Monthly Boardriders Competitions: Running regular, structured club rounds tailored to international para-surfing classification divisions.
  2. Specialized Fleet & Gear Management: Purchasing and maintaining shared adaptive surfboards, chest supports, custom fins, and sand-capable transport gear.
  3. Volunteer & Water Safety Networks: Training dedicated beach pushers, catchers, and ocean safety teams to support surfers with higher support needs.
  4. Pathway to High Performance: Coaching and mentoring local talent to transition from recreational ocean sessions to the Australian Para Surfing Titles and ISA World Championships.

4. What We Are Raising Funds to Do (Funding Priorities)

Donations raised through our Australian Sports Foundation platform directly fund critical equipment, event infrastructure, and athlete support:

  • Custom Adaptive Surfboards ($2,500 – $4,500 each): Custom-shaped boards with handles, foam wedges, and specialized tail setups for prone and unseated divisions.
  • Beach Access & Transfer Equipment: All-terrain beach mats and specialized water chairs to safely transport athletes across deep sand into the line-up.
  • Travel Grants for Regional & National Events: Subsidising travel, accommodation, and entry fees for team members competing at the Australian Para Surfing Titles.
  • Water Safety & First Aid Gear: Inflatable safety vests, radios, wetsuits for volunteers, and specialized ocean rescue equipment.
