ABOUT Palmerston Boxing Academy

Yarrawonga, NT

The Palmerston Boxing Academy is dedicated to transforming the lives of Indigenous Youth in Darwin Northern Territory and providing them with opportunities to achieve their goals.

We are seeking urgent funding to fund the programs being delivered free to the Indigenous community in Darwin and to take the Indigenous youth to various boxing tournaments in the Northern Territory and Nationally.

The Palmerston Boxing Academy was established over 20 years ago by Troy Lewer, a level 1 Australian Institute of Sport Boxing Coach and Yamitji Wadagi man from Western Australia who has lived in the Darwin for over 20 years with his family.

Troy has been providing these services to Indigenous youth and their families with no funding. He has been self-funding this program for many years.

The Academy set up new premises at 37 Georgina Cres Yarrawonga. The venue was fitted out in great detail so the premises can cater for programs for all ages  and for troubled youth and the greater community.

Palmerston Boxing Academy is dedicated to working with troubled Indigenous youth, helping them stay out of the youth justice system and guiding them toward successful lives and avoiding contact with the youth justice system and criminal justice system.

The Palmerston Boxing Academy delivers unique programs targeting a combination of positive values with real outcomes with Indigenous youth.

The value of Palmerston Boxing Academy’s services include:

Boxing

Self-worth

Indigenous youth often struggle with persistent feelings of low self-worth. The Palmerston Boxing Academy provides one-on-one support to help them develop strategies and gain guidance for their personal growth.

Discipline

The Palmerston Boxing Academy offers discipline programs designed to guide Indigenous youth toward positive behaviour.

The program intervenes by creating environment of discipline through boxing, allowing our young people to express natural aggression through Boxing and celebrating with them their talent aspiration.

Anger Awareness

This program is designed for Indigenous youth who struggle with controlling their emotions. It helps them identify triggers and develop coping strategies.

The Academy delivers youth and senior sessions 3 days a week.

Each session has between 100-180 participants per session and is growing rapidly.

The academy has had boxers attend international boxing championships in Adelaide and Brisbane and Territory boxing championships in Darwin and Alice Springs.

In February 2026 two young Indigenous boys won the Queensland state championships.

The Academy took five young Indigenous youth to Adelaide for the club Championships in May 2026 and took home 2 gold and 2 silver medals.

A team of 10 boxers then attended the Alice Springs Boxing Championships in June 2026 to support Jason Lord and Arrernte Boxing Academy
