ABOUT Pickleball for Parkinson's Australia Ltd

    Sutherland, NSW

    What is the P4P project?

We are developing an evidence-based pickleball program that clubs can use to safely and inclusively support people living with Parkinson’s to play, connect and thrive.

    Why?

Parkinson’s Disease is the fastest growing neurological condition in the world and the second most common neurological condition in Australia, following dementia.

    • Around 50 Australian's are diagnosed every day
    • 1 in 100 people over 60 years are diagnosed each year.
    • Almost 1 in 5 people diagnosed are of working age, and 1 in 10 are under 45.

Many of us are impacted by Parkinson’s either personally or because it has affected our family or friends. It can significantly limit a person’s mobility, independence, social participation and quality of life.

    What can help?

While medications can help manage symptoms, exercise is the only intervention found to slow the progress of the disease.

    Why pickleball?

Pickleball is social, fun, accessible and inclusive. Early international studies suggest pickleball improves both motor and non-motor symptoms of Parkinson’s.

    How will we do it?

Over the next 2 years, we need $100,000 to:

    • Design and test a coaching and mentoring/buddy program
    • Engage independent researchers to examine the benefits, evaluate the coaching program and publish the findings
    • Produce a scalable, evidence-based program that can be implemented by pickleball clubs anywhere.
