ABOUT Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron Foundation
The Squadron Foundation
A legacy worth supporting
The tradition of philanthropy at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron is entwined with the club’s history dating back to the club’s origins in 1862. From humble beginnings in a room in the Royal Exchange Building to the waterfront location on Sydney Harbour we all enjoy today, the club has grown over time with the help of generous contributions from Members helping to build our extensive clubhouse, grounds and waterfront facilities as well as building our collection of magnificent trophies and artifacts.
In 1993, Commodore Norman Longworth established a Trust, now called ‘The Squadron Foundation’ to advance the objectives of the Squadron. The Trusts focus is on three key sailing-related areas: Development Programs, Representation and Infrastructure.
For generations, the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron has been more than a club — it is a place shaped by its Members, defined by shared experience, and sustained by a deep sense of belonging. The Squadron Foundation exists to ensure that what we value today continues to thrive for those who follow.
As is the tradition within great private members’ clubs, philanthropy plays a quiet but vital role. It reflects a collective understanding that the Club’s future is not simply inherited — it is supported, strengthened and passed on.
The Foundation provides a meaningful way for Members to contribute to the ongoing success of the Squadron — supporting our people, our programs and our facilities, as well as the Club’s presence on the national and international stage.
