ABOUT Russell Harris

Mount Julian, QLD

Whitsunday teenager Russell Harris has been selected to represent Australia in the Formula Kite class at the 2025 Youth World Sailing Championships in Portugal, 12–20 December.

This is an extraordinary opportunity to compete against the best young sailors in the world and to represent both Australia and the Whitsundays on the international stage.

Like many Youth athletes in emerging sports, Russell must self-fund his campaign, covering all costs including equipment (worth more than a mid-sized car), entry fees, flights, accommodation, meals, and a share of Australian Sailing’s coaching and support staff expenses — the amount payable to Australian Sailing to attend the Youth Worlds is $11,000.

We’re seeking the support of anyone passionate about fostering local talent and helping our youth chase their dreams — particularly in lesser-known sports that don’t receive mainstream funding.

Russell is fortunate to have the mentorship and support of Breiana Whitehead, a fellow North Queenslander and 2024 Paris Olympian, who placed 7th in the Formula Kite class and continues to inspire the next generation.

Formula Kite made its Olympic debut in Paris 2024, and with events confirmed for Los Angeles 2028 and Brisbane 2032, the sport is only gaining momentum — and Russell is right at the forefront of that wave.

Your support, no matter the size, will help Russell get to Portugal and proudly fly the flag for Australia and the Whitsundays.
