    ABOUT Sam Rickard

    Ringwood East, VIC

I have proudly been a member of The Goannas since 2022, and ever since, my dream has been to compete in the Deaflympics.

Thanks to your incredible support, I had a taste of the world stage in Greece in 2023. More recently, we made history together by winning Gold at the Asia Pacific Deaf Basketball Championships in Melbourne in 2024.

These milestones have all been steps towards qualifying for the Deaflympics in Japan.

Now with my sights firmly set on Tokyo this November, I am dedicated, training daily in preparation and gathering with the country’s top deaf athletes monthly here in Melbourne. Participating in high-performance team camps while balancing our own training, work, study, and family commitments. Many of us miss key events with family and friends as a result of our schedules.

This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to represent Australia and the Australian Deaf Community on the world stage, competing against the best Deaf athletes from around the globe.

However… we may have qualified, but getting there still comes at a cost. Like many Deaf athletes, I am responsible for funding this journey myself. This includes expenses like travel, accommodation, uniforms, insurance, tournament fees, training costs, equipment and interpreters.

    Totalling over $6,500.

I'm reaching out for your support.

Whether that's a message of encouragement, a like or comment on a post, spreading the word, flicking on the games for a watch or if able to, making a donation.

Every bit of support helps me come closer to achieving this dream and representing Australia and the Deaf community with pride.

Thank you for being part of the journey.
