ABOUT ST KEVINS TENNIS CLUB INCORPORATED
The St Kevin’s Tennis Club operates as a fully self‑funded community organisation, receiving no council support of any kind. Unlike council‑funded clubs, we rely entirely on memberships, events, fund‑raisers, and the dedication of volunteers to keep our club thriving.
Nestled within the St Kevin’s Parish community at 44 Herlihys Road, Lower Templestowe, our club sits in a beautiful, leafy setting often accompanied by the cheerful calls of kookaburras — a backdrop that reflects the warm, welcoming spirit of the community we serve.
Every contribution, big or small, makes a real difference in helping us support our members and the wider community into the future.
Why We’re Fundraising
We’re raising funds to protect the future of our club and ensure it remains a safe, vibrant, and inclusive space for everyone. To achieve this, we have several key projects planned across two phases.
Phase 1 — Court Lighting Upgrade & Court Revitalisation
We will -
- Replace our ageing metal halide lighting with modern, energy‑efficient LED lights
- Revitalise our ageing courts to improve safety, playability, and accessibility
These upgrades will ensure people of all ages, abilities, and fitness levels can enjoy tennis in a welcoming environment.
Our goal is to raise $20,000 over the next 12 months to support this important phase.
Phase 2 — Clubroom Maintenance & Improvements
We will -
- Enhance our clubroom facilities so they remain functional, comfortable, and inviting.
- This space is the social heart of our club — where people gather, connect, and feel at home.
Together, these projects will help us continue offering a place where people come together, build friendships, develop skills, and thrive for generations to come.
Our Story
The St Kevin’s Tennis Club exists because of vision, generosity, and community spirit. The club was born from the dream of the late Reverend Father Charles McCann, affectionately known as Father Charlie — and a dedicated group of volunteers who donated their time, skills, and materials to bring that dream to life.
In 1978, the club’s first committee was formed and its first president elected. More than 100 letters were sent to local families, offering Foundation Memberships at $100 per family for three years. This early support raised $6,000 — enough to give the committee the confidence to begin building the courts.
Every Saturday morning during construction, Father Charlie would celebrate Mass, then drive his tractor/front‑end loader to the site to wait for volunteers. The original four courts opened in March 1980. The “top two courts” followed in 1984/85, again built with volunteer labour and donated materials. Lighting for the top courts was installed in 1998 — another major volunteer‑driven effort.
Our club was built by the community, for the community and that legacy continues today.
