ABOUT Thomas Russell
I have been selected to represent Australia in kayaking at the 2025 ICF Junior Sprint World Championships in Portugal.
I live in Colac, regional Victoria and paddle for the Geelong Canoe Club based on the Barwon River. I started my kayaking journey after going to a "come and try day" at the Geelong Canoe Club in January 2024. After enjoying surf ski paddling in lifesaving, it seemed like a good progression; little did I know at that point in time, that I had started a journey where I would train harder than ever before and overcome the challenges of being an athlete outside of a metro centre. I train predominately by myself on Lake Colac in the morning, dealing with the northerly winds and choppy conditions before going to school. I originally taught myself how to paddle from watching You Tube clips. I now have an amazing coach from Geelong, Sean McGee who supports my progression through the sport.
After achieving results at the Paddle Australia Nationals I find myself in the privileged position of being picked to represent Australia at the Junior Sprint World Championships in Portugal in July 2025. There are 6 male and 8 female athletes on the junior team, from all different states in Australia. I leave on July 7th to fly to Adelaide for the Australian camp at SAIS. We then fly out on July 12th and train in Portugal until the World Championships begin on July 23rd.
These funds will contribute to the costs of getting me to Portugal and support me to continue to be a regional athlete competing at an international level.
I am grateful to live close to Lake Colac and the Barwon River for my training. The guidance of the Geelong paddling community has been instrumental in helping me get to this stage.
Your support, no matter what sized is very gratefully received.
