ABOUT Varun Lal
I’m Varun Lal—a Fijian‑Australian mechanical technician, civil‑engineering master’s student, and national powerlifting champion. After only nine weeks in single‑ply lifting, I earned a place on the Australian team for the World Powerlifting Championships this November in Durban. My goal: a 250 – 260 kg deadlift and a spot on the podium.
Powerlifting has become more than a sport for me. Training helped me stay focused while adapting to life in Australia, supporting my sugar‑cane‑farmer father (now recovering from a serious accident) and honoring the sacrifices my family made for my education. Standing on the world stage will show young Pacific Islanders that borders—and budgets—don’t have to limit their dreams.
Why I’m fundraising
International competition isn’t cheap. Airfare from Brisbane to Durban, eight nights of accommodation, competition entry fees, and mandatory team coaching.
