Mercy Huts, established in 2012, is an Australian Charity that established Rote Island Huts which is a not-for-profit family retreat. Mercy Huts aims to build capacity in the local people living in poverty in Rote Island Indonesia and the visitors who share its vision to promote responsible surfing tourism. 

Rote Island Huts offers cultural awareness experiences, surf coaching and development of leadership skills for locals and travellers alike. Rote Island Huts affords guests a holiday with purpose allowing surfers to refine their abilities surfing world-class breaks whilst contributing to community development projects serving the very communities whose waves they enjoy.

This helps shape a future of responsible surfing tourism in Indonesia and abroad.

Effective Actions

Education and training (capacity building)

• All profits from Mercy Huts surf retreat will flow back into the local communities. i.e. community development initiatives, Mercy Indo, training, education, etc.
• Facilitated connection with Sanitarium to provide noodle machine, sanitarium/training, and school in Mbuaen
• Teaching English, training in food preparation and hygiene. Instruction in basic health and hygiene, nutrition; MH has aided in training for noodle production as a small business
• We partner with existing surf organisations for the development of young Australian surfers. We offer cultural awareness experiences, surf and leadership skills improving mental well being and fostering community spirit by bringing people from different cultures together.
