Australia first became involved in competition fly fishing in May 1987 having been invited to enter an invitational team to the VII World Fly Fishing Championships.
Fly Fish Australia Incorporated (FFA) was formed in 1989 and became the recognised body by Fips Mouche International Sport Fly Fishing Federation for the purpose of selecting teams to represent Australia in the sport of fly fishing at World Championships.
WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Australia has competed in all World Championships from 1987 to the current day excluding the 2021 Championships in Finland due to COVID. We have one team gold medal (1999), one team silver medal (1987) and two team bronze medals (1988 and 2000).
Individually, Ross Stewart won gold in 1999, Owen Nuttridge won bronze in 1995 and Terry Piggot won bronze in 1988.
As recently as 2022, our Ladies competed in the inaugural World Ladies Championships held in Norway in 2022 and finished a very credible 5th.
Australia is also represented at the World Masters Championships, with Australia first competing in 2015 in Peru.
As of yet, Australia is yet to compete at the World Youth Championships which have been held since 2011.
OTHER COMPETITIONS
Australia is also represented at Commonwealth competitions and Oceania competitions which are held bi-annually.
