THE CHALLENGE:

374 people of the Ice Sports Tasmania community lost their identity on Saturday 21st May, when the local rink was closed after being sold to developers who will repurpose the site.

Tasmanian children are now the only children in Australia who do not have access to an Ice Rink in their state.

It is impossible to practice, learn and develop without regular and consistent training and competition opportunities.

Ultimately, the cost of participating in our sports is now too high for many of our members. They have lost their identity, the fun and their community.

To participate in Figure Skating, Ice Hockey and any other ice sport from Tasmania now requires:

• Flights - return to Melbourne
• Accommodation - minimum 1 night
• Food
• Ice - access to the facility to train

Furthermore, as most members are underage most athletes need to be accompanied by a parent or coach to travel.

GOVERNMENT:

Ice Sports Tasmania Inc. are continuing to liaise with all governments to find a viable solution to the current situation. This includes short, medium and long term strategies to keep the sporting communtiy connected to each other and to their sports. Ultimately, we are working towards a contemporary ice sports facility being built.

OUR GOAL:

• Ensure that Tasmanian children do not lose the opportunity to participate and develop in a sport that they love
• Minimise cost as a barrier for retaining our current members in the sports that they have trained and competed in for years
• Support Tasmanians to continue chase their winter Olympic sporting dreams
