Australia’s Amazing Para DanceSport Team roll up for Tokyo

Yes they are on wheels and Yes they can DANCE!

Three Para Athletes from Perth will be making history by being the first Australian team ever to compete at an International Paralympic Committee (IPC) event, the Tokyo 2023 Para Dance Sport International Competition to be held in August 2023. 

This competition is a major first for the para dancers, enabling them to showcase Para DanceSport as a viable adaptive sport for People with Disabilities in Australia.

The Australian Para DanceSport team eager to wow the competition and impress the judges in Tokyo will consist of:

Amanda Smith partnered by Peter Hegarty

The team will be accompanied by their dedicated support crew - Team Manager, Deborah Hegarty, and Team Coach, Judy Pegus.

Para DanceSport originated in Sweden in 1968 for recreational and rehabilitation purposes, it began in Australia 5 years ago, with Western Australia leading the way.  Over that time, WA’s finest para dancers have developed extraordinarily.

With support from the WA state, and local government, and Rotary the local Para DanceSport scene continues to thrive.

Para and Ability Dance Western Australia is a not-for-profit association assisting dancers with a disability to achieve their dreams and are part of the driving force of Para DanceSport in Australia. This competition is a major opportunity for Australian para dancers to showcase Para DanceSport as an adaptive sport for People with Disabilities. The trip is going to be a tremendous learning experience and an event that will propel Para DanceSport further in Australia.
