A Message From Joe Barakat

Dear Former St George, Port Hacking, Southern Districts Players and Supporters,

I am writing to share an important initiative aimed at building a lasting legacy for rugby in the St George and Sutherland Shire. Together with Marcus Carbone and five other former Southern Districts Rugby players, we have established the Rebels Rugby Foundation (RRF) to support the club’s future success.

The RRF’s values align with those of the community and the rugby club, and it operates with its own bank account and governance framework.

After serving as Head Coach for the 2024 season, I experienced firsthand the challenges posed by the resource inequalities in the Shute Shield. These limitations hindered our ability to compete effectively, and I want to ensure that future coaches and teams have the resources they need to succeed.

Inspiration for this initiative comes from similar groups at other clubs, like Warringah’s “Hill Billys” and West Harbour’s “Legends,” whose contributions have had a major impact on their clubs' success. The “Hill Billys,” for example, are among Warringah Rugby’s largest sponsors.

We now have an opportunity to come together as one, to revive and sustain rugby in our community. We’re asking you to contribute in one of the following ways.

  • $300 or $500 - Rebels Donor (before the start of the season)
  • $1,500 - Legacy Donor (before the end of June)

These tax-deductible donations will be pooled into a fund to support key initiatives for the club, ensuring a sustainable future. A designated RRF representative will oversee fund allocation, ensuring strict adherence to the following objectives:

Objectives of the Rebels Foundation:

  • Level the Playing Field: Raise funds to help Southern Districts’ Senior and Colts teams compete equally with other Shute Shield clubs.
  • Foster Engagement: Connect current, past, and future supporters to create a shared vision for rugby’s success in the St George and Sutherland Shire.
  • Ensure Longevity: Develop a financial support model that secures rugby’s future in our community.
  • Enhance Facilities: Upgrade rugby facilities and equipment to support the club’s goals.

How You’ll Be Recognised

As a token of our appreciation, donors of $300 or more will be invited to two home games each year, where you’ll enjoy some of our hospitality. These events will also provide an opportunity to connect with fellow contributors, brainstorm ideas, and celebrate your collective impact.

Building a Strong Foundation

To maximise impact, I propose allowing funds to accumulate through 2025, establishing a strong financial base for action in 2026. We will also establish a minimum balance threshold to maintain a robust and responsive fund.

Join us as we drive positive change together!

I’ve already spoken with many friends from St George, Port Hacking, and Southern Districts, and the enthusiasm has been incredible. By coming together, we can ensure that the club no longer faces the financial constraints of the past.

Whether it’s bringing in new talent, purchasing equipment, or supporting other critical needs, your contribution will make a difference.

Let’s come together to elevate Southern Districts Rugby Club to new heights.

Warm regards,

Joe Barakat
