Wide Bay Basketball is a non-profit organisation affiliated with, and operates under, The Alley Oop Project, which is an organisation that uses basketball as a tool to raise awareness for mental health and well-being and raises funds for preferred mental health resource partners Black Dog and Beyond Blue through the Hoop-A-Thon event.

We acknowledge young people at risk through trauma, disadvantage, social isolation and discrimination, are more likely to have adverse outcomes over the course of their lives. These adverse outcomes might include homelessness. not completing school, unemployment, addiction, poor mental and physical health, domestic violence and interactions with the police and justice systems. Therefore, we have a program called Assist & Rise that helps young people engage in a positive activity in a safe environment that allows them the opportunity to learn, create and display core Values.

Teaching values through the sport of basketball with our Assist & Rise Program – Sport is an integral part of Australian culture and society. Sport has and continues to play a major role in shaping the Australian identity. Sport can provide a positive influence that enriches the lives of everyone involved in it. Sport can also provide an ideal environment to learn and understand yourself and your Values.

Whether we are consciously aware of them or not, every individual has a Core set of personal Values. Your Values can be defined as the deeply held beliefs you have about yourself as a person, and about how you should behave or act in life and they do not change or move over time. Values can range from the belief in hard work and sense of commitment, to the more psychological, such as resilience, honesty and community.

Whether you’re a participant, a coach, an administrator, a volunteer or even a spectator, sport is unique in the way it can challenge people and strengthen their Core beliefs and Values. Some of these may include commitment, decisiveness, friendship, honesty, integrity, leadership, loyalty, reliability, resourcefulness, tolerance, tradition and teamwork.

The Australian Sports Commission defines the Core principles of sport in Australia through The Essence of Australian Sport.

Fairness – operating within the spirit of the rules, never taking an unfair advantage, and making informed and honourable decisions at all times.

Respect – recognising the contribution which people make to sport, treating them with dignity and consideration, as well as caring for the property and equipment they use.

Responsibility – taking responsibility for one’s actions and being a positive role model at all times.

Safety – encouraging healthy and safe procedures, preventing and reporting dangerous behaviour, while demonstrating concern for others.

Sport is an unparalleled vehicle for enhancing social inclusion. From the Olympics and International World Championships to the local parks and clubs around Australia, sport provides the opportunity for culturally and linguistically diverse peoples to come together and play. Age, neurological disorders, mental illnesses and physical and mental disability are no barriers for sport with modified rules and equipment, support, help and guidance now commonplace.

Sport is a tool for collaboration, diversity and building social cohesion. It will also contribute to personal growth through understanding the importance of Values, testing these Values and developing the capacity to make ethical decisions.

By participating in the Assist & Rise Program this will result in:

For youth at risk:

  • Increased confidence.
  • Increased hope for the future.
  • Increased social interactions.
  • Increased community interactions.
  • Re-engagement with education.
  • Actively seeking work

And eventually will lead to:

  • Educational attainment (completion of Year 10, 11 or 12, TAFE, apprenticeship or university).
  • Stable employment over time (full-time or part-time).
  • Regular volunteering and community contribution.
  • A stable support network in place.
  • Stable housing.
  • Reduced reliance on government services.
  • Improved health and wellbeing.

Intercultural Basketball Festival

What’s the difference between multicultural and intercultural?

Where 'multicultural' relates to varied cultural groups existing independently of one another, 'intercultural' refers to something occurring between different cultures.

What is the primary difference between multiculturalism and interculturalism?

While multiculturalism focuses on a national level questioning the national identity, interculturalism emphasises the local level because of the geographical and physical proximity among groups that facilitate dialogue and exchanges.

Our coaches will teach players of all positions and levels to play smart basketball, be coaches on the court, and to become leaders on and off the court.
