The Australian Sports Foundation is entering a new chapter as Grant O’Brien steps down as Chair after nearly four years of dedicated leadership. During his tenure, Grant helped shape a period of tremendous growth for the Foundation, including record-breaking donations and expanded support for athletes and sports organisations across Australia.

Reflecting on his contributions, Minister for Sport Hon Anika Wells MP expressed gratitude for the impact of Grant’s leadership.

“Grant has been instrumental in driving the ASF’s growth and impact, helping countless organisations and athletes, from grassroots to elite, achieve their goals. His tenure has seen significant advancements, including support for Australian Olympic and Paralympic team members who competed with distinction in Paris this year,” she said.

Taking on the role of interim Chair is ASF Board member Lisa Cotton. With deep ties in both the sport and philanthropic sectors, Lisa brings a wealth of expertise and a strong vision for the future.

“I congratulate Grant on his outstanding contribution to the Australian Sports Foundation Board, and I am confident we will build on those strong foundations,’’ she shared. “The ASF is one of the guiding lights for Australian sport, and I look forward to supporting its mission as we search for a permanent Chair.”

Adding to the transition, ASF Board member Andrew Baildon OLY will be stepping down after six years, leaving a legacy of dedication and insight from his unique perspective as an Olympian and leader in the sports sector. The ASF thanks Andrew for his invaluable contributions and commitment.

Looking ahead, the Foundation is thrilled to welcome Kate Thiele, a seasoned leader with experience across not-for-profit and commercial sectors. Kate brings expertise in strategic planning and impact-driven leadership, which will help bolster the Foundation’s ongoing mission.

As part of this period of growth, a national search is underway for the permanent Chair and Director positions. Applications are open until November 10 and details are available through Watermark International.

With these transitions, the Australian Sports Foundation continues to support sport at every level. In FY24 alone, we saw record donations with over 72,900 contributions, totalling $98.8M which helped fund a range of projects aimed at expanding the reach of sport nationwide.
